Hero lives in a small town. Maple Town actually. A little place where not much seems to happen. Until one day that is. Hero wakes up early to find his PokeGear sitting on his table. It was sent to be fixed a while ago. When he goes downstairs for breakfast, his mom tells him that the new Pokemon Card Shop was having their long awaited for Grand Opening. She tells him he should check it out. So he does, and looks around for a while.

When Hero decides he is through, he leaves. As he walks out the door, him mom calls him. She tells him that Doctor Stratus has arrived from his business trip in Emerald City and needs to have a word with him. Hero then makes his way over to the Doctor's Lab.

When he arrives, the Doctor surprises him with the news that Himself and a team of Pokemon Specialists are working on a project, and he wants Hero to be apart of it. The only thing he wants him to do is take an letter to A friend from Evergreen Town, Professor Magnet. He wishes him good luck, and Hero leaves.

When he arrives at Professor Magnet's "Lab" (more like a pieced together room full of home-made machinery), he gets introduced to Professor Magnet's Niece, Robin. Robin is a friendly, but VERY competitive girl.

Professor Magnet is very excited about the project, and wants to start as soon as possible.But under one condition, that Doctor Stratus gives Robin her First Pokemon.

As hero leaves Magnet's House with Robin, a shout is heard from the direction of the Pokecenter. A man in a Dark cloak runs out of the Pokecenter with a back of Pokeballs over his back. Nurse Joy runs after him yelling "Stop! Thief! Somebody do something!". She stops as he escapes into the safety of the forest.

Hero, seeing as how he is the Hero of the game, runs after the bandit and chases him into the trees. A little ways ahead he spots the bag of pokeballs lying in the grass. The bandit stops running and advances on him. He must quickly choose One of Three pokeballs in the sack to defend himself.

Hero easily defeats the man, and he vanishes. Nurse joy comes running through the trees to thank him. She notices that the pokemon Hero chose has taken a liking to him, and she rewards him by letting him keep it. She tells him the sad story of how it was Abandoned earlier that day and that the Pokemon no longer has an owner, until now.

Hero makes his way back to Doctor Stratus's Lab and finds that he is already talking to Robin. He hands her her very first Pokemon. She is overjoyed, and wants to battle with it quickly. She challenges Hero to a Battle.

Doctor Stratus quickly steps in and says that it is not the right time for that. She needs to bond with it first, and train it to become stronger. He then turns to Hero to ask how his encounter with Professor Magnet went. He is startled when he finds out what happened with the Pokecenter, and congratulates Hero on his first pokemon.

He then tells Hero and Robin about what his team is doing. They have discovered some very ancient passages at the foot of Mt. Luxer. He explains that many fossils are being discovered, and sightings of unknown Pokemon keep reappearing. He wants both Hero and Robin to travel there and tell the team that Doctor Stratus is going to be there soon, and that they need to prepare for their Big Project.

And, with that, he sends Hero on his way, To begin his journey to the base of Mt. Luxer, and start his way to becoming a Pokemon Master...
